Today, we are celebrating harvest, as we hear about the work BMS World Mission are doing in Indonesia to help people rebuild their lives after the 2004 tsunami and subsequent earthquakes. Our pastor, David Hughes, will bring a message called 'Higher Ground' based around Psalm 46 and inspired by BMS World Mission's material.

English, Literacy & Numeracy classes

These classes help many local people - migrant workers and longer established residents - and it is important that we pray for their continued success and for the Adult Learning Service who provide expert tutors.

We'll be going for our annual Church day to Sywell Park on Saturday. There'll be games (a boules competition, ball games, etc.), a treasure hunt, a picnic (bring own food) and an open-air communion to finish off.

Preaching at the anniversary service of Kuldiga Baptist Church.

David preached at Kuldiga Baptist Church's 141st anniversary service on August 19th. A group from the Latvian church visited us at Mill Road in March of this year and this invitation is a sign of the growing relationship which is developing between our two churches.

The church presented David with the gift of a hand-painted glass plate, showing the famous Kuldiga Bridge and David gave them a framed photograph of our church. David preached in English with translation into Latvian and was pleased with all the positive comments received from the congregation after the service.

The weekend spent at Kuldiga was an absolute delight and David and family extend their sincere thanks to the church family there and particularly to Vilnis Jurmalis and family, who hosted them so generously.

Trip to see our friends in Niort

During our summer holiday in France, Jenny, Hope and I visited our friends at Niort Baptist Church, staying in the house of church pastor, Sture Larsson. It was wonderful to take part in their Sunday service and to bring the greetings of the fellowship at Mill Road BC!

We were so well looked after by Church Secretary, Michel Reaud and his wife, Genevieve. One of the highlights was a trip by boat on the Marais, which includes the canal system near Niort (see above).

Freedom Day, March 25 (2007) @ MRBC

We held a Freedom Day service to mark the bicentenary of the passing of the Act which abolished the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and to highlight the ongoing slavery in our world today.

Our pastor was chained up to represent how so many people are enslaved by sin and the congregation had to find the combination to the lock by finding a Bible verse (Galatians 5:1)!

On arrival, each member of the congregation received a red or a green voucher. Later, all the people with red vouchers were given a piece of (Fair Trade) chocolate, while it was revealed that the green voucher holders were to be put to work on cocoa plantations in west Africa. It highlighted the trafficking of children across national borders to work on the cocoa farms which indirectly provide nearly 50% of the world's chocolate.

We also created a Freedom Wall with a prayer for the end of all types of slavery and signed up to it by putting our handprints on it.

We ended the service by breaking a huge paper chain during the singing of 'And can it be' ('My chains fell off...').

Visit from Kuldiga Baptist Church in Latvia, Pt 2

We were delighted to welcome 13 members from Kuldiga Baptist Church in Latvia to Wellingborough for a couple of days. The visit was a huge success, with our link with the church being strengthened and personal friendships forged - even the weather was bright and sunny for our outings.

We look forward to future contacts and know that our relationship will be mutually beneficial.

Visit from Kuldiga Baptist Church in Latvia

This Thursday, we welcome thirteen members of Kuldiga Baptist Church to Wellingborough and we are really looking forward to getting to know them better.

My family and I visited Kuldiga last year while I was on sabbatical leave and we were so well looked after by the folks from the Baptist church - now we can return the compliment! We will be showing them around the area and holding a meal in their honour on Friday evening. After the meal, we'll join together to sing English and Latvian worship songs in the church - it should be a brilliant evening!

Please pray that the visit will be a great success.

Salsa success

Our Salsa Dance Party on Saturday (March 3rd) was a great success with almost fifty of us learning how to move to the Latin groove!

SalsaOxford were brilliant in the way they taught us and a wonderful evening was had by all. Thanks are due to all who got the hall ready and put on such a delicious supper!

This Sunday (November 26th) at 10.45 a.m. Daada Luogon of London City Mission will be coming to update us on the work in which he is involved in London. Tea/coffee soft drinks will be available afterwards and then we will have our usual soup lunch together. Everyone welcome.

Sabbatical memories

On my sabbatical, we visited the Freie evangelische Gemeinde in Wittlich, Germany (see earlier post) and later linked up with Haapsalu Baptist Church in Estonia and Kuldiga Baptist Church in Latvia (see photos with this posting). It was fascinating visiting eastern Europe and hearing the stories of Christians who lived through the years of Soviet control - they have my utmost admiration and respect.

I was privileged to preach in both churches and we were bowled over by the wonderful hospitality we received from these wonderful people! Thank-you, Haapsalu BC and Kuldiga BC - I'm sure we'll visit again!

On Sunday July 23rd we have our normal morning worship service at 10.45 a.m. with myself leading and preaching on the significance of baptism. At 5.00 p.m. we have a shared tea, followed by a short time of worship.

Baptist Assembly April 28-30

We (David, Jenny & Hope) were at the Baptist Assembly in Brighton over the Bank Holiday weekend and what a great event it was! Thousands of people from Baptist churches all over the country converged on the city and focused on how we, as a denomination, can 'centre the margins' - be inclusive and empowering of people on the margins of society.

Highlights of the Assembly were the Prism (alt. worship) sessions, the Baptist Union report (including the wonderful work going on at Shoreditch Tabernacle, and Gareth Davies-Jones and Krystaal leading worship.

A really inspiring time for us all!

I (David) have just got back from a trip to Wittlich in Germany, one of Wellingborough's twin towns, and was privileged to preach at the Freie evangelische Gemeinde (FeG) on Easter Day (see photo, above). The links between MRBC and the FeG Wittlich are developing all the time and we look forward to welcoming members from the FeG to our church in the future.

Tomorrow, Saturday March 18th, from 2 - 5 p.m. we are holding a singing workshop entitled 'Sing Your Socks Off', led by Jenny Goodman. Anyone still wanting to come along, please contact David via e-mail or phone as soon as possible.

Update: This was a brilliant event, attended by 36 people from the church and the local community. It was fun all the way through, at times very moving, and always completely exhilarating! Jenny Goodman is a fantastic teacher whose enthusiasm is infectious and everyone who attended the workshop was completely bowled over by it.

Northumbria - St. Cuthbert's Island

Today's pictures are of St. Cuthbert's Island, a very small island reachable at low tide from a beach situated near the old Priory. On the first day we were on Lindisfarne, we walked over to St. Cuthbert's Island as the tide was beginning to turn and only just got back before the sea covered our path - in fact, we all got slightly wet feet!

When serving at Lindisfarne, St. Cuthbert used to retire to the island to pray in solitude and silence, and a cross on the island marks a hollow where he probably prayed. The photos show: (top) a view from the island across the sea; and (bottom) a view from the island back towards the Priory on Lindisfarne. We all felt so close to God as we walked in the footsteps of St. Cuthbert - we love Lindisfarne!

Northumbria - land of Celtic saints

I've just returned from a wonderful family holiday to Northumbria in the north of England - hence the break in postings. Over the next few days, I'll post a few photos of Holy Island (Lindisfarne) and the surrounding area, starting with one of the far side of the island, so often ignored by tourists. More church information will follow over the next few days.

BOOK WEEK - Day 6

A quickie today, as I'm really busy. However, I couldn't leave this book, 'The Way of the Heart' by Henri Nouwen, out of my book week.

I'm quite a latecomer to Nouwen's work - I'm not sure what took me so long to find it, but I'm so glad that I have now. There's a depth of understanding, a wisdom, in his writing, along with the gentlest humility - a perfect combination! This particular book is so special and important to me, with its emphases on solitude, silence and prayer, as I explore the contemplative side of my spirituality.

Read this book and you'll never be the same Christian again!

BOOK WEEK - Day 5

Today’s book is ‘Celtic Daily Prayer’ by The Northumbria Community, a group which is part of the new monasticism movement and which has a Celtic-style expression. It’s a wonderful daily office, but it’s also so much more.

I try to say the daily office as regularly as I can and I do so enjoy the poetry of the liturgy - it really does make me feel closer to God as I say it. The daily office consists of morning, midday and evening prayer, and there is a different compline for each day of the week.

In addition, there is so much more: prayers, blessings and graces for different occasions; meditations for each day of the month; a communion liturgy; a family shabbat; liturgy for rites of passage and seasons of the year; two separate series of readings for each day of the year. It really is a treasure trove of resources.

BOOK WEEK - Day 4

Today’s entry on my list of books which have been most influential in my Christian life and pastoral ministry is ‘The Challenge of Jesus" by N.T. Wright (SPCK, 2000). In this book Wright addresses two main questions: ‘Why do we need a historical understanding of Jesus?’ and ‘How can this affect Christian discipleship today?’; and produces a work which is scholarly, accessible and practical.

"Many Christians have been, frankly, sloppy in their thinking and talking about Jesus, and hence, sadly, in their praying and in their practice of discipleship. We cannot assume that by saying the word ‘Jesus’, still less the word ‘Christ’, we are automatically in touch with the real Jesus who walked and talked in first-century Palestine, the Jesus who, according to the letter to the Hebrews, is the same yesterday, today and for ever." (p.ix) The chapters that follow are stimulating, instructive and faith-enhancing.

For me, N.T. Wright is a giant among theologians and ranks alongside Karl Barth and Jurgen Moltmann in importance.

Today's choice is the book which - apart from the Bible - has most influenced my Christian walk: 'The Pilgrim's Progress' by John Bunyan. In fact, I first read it at the age of 15 - fourteen years before I accepted Christ as my Lord and Saviour - when I was earnestly seeking God and beginning to attend various churches and Quaker Meeting Houses in my home town. The photo is of that actual copy that I read all those thirty-two years ago! It's pages are now quite yellowy-brown, but it remains a dearly loved possession.

Bunyan's story of Christian's progress towards the Celestial City excited me then, and still excites me; it taught me then and still teaches me; it moved me then, and still moves me - it is timeless in its relevance and beauty. And please don't forget the second part, in which his wife Christiana makes the same emotional journey. It is a masterpiece that every Christian and 'God-seeker' should read.

BOOK WEEK - Day 2

Today’s book in my own Book Week is ‘The Art of Pastoring: ministry without all the answers" by David Hansen (InterVarsity Press, 1994). This book is a little gem that I would recommend to any church minister and would also be of interest to any church member.

In the book, Hansen talks about "what it’s like, in an often confusing and messy world, to be a ‘parable of Jesus Christ’ on a day to day basis" and manages to do so in a very humble, very gentle way, illustrating his ideas with images from his fly-fishing trips.

I personally don’t like ‘how-to’ books, because what is successful in one church or one ministry does not often translate into success in another church or ministry, due to the difference in contexts. This is NOT a ‘how-to’ book at all; Hansen invites the reader to explore the issues with him and helps us reflect upon their significance within the context of our own churches, within our own ministries. I like this book very much!

BOOK WEEK - Day 1

It’s Book Week at my local infant (elementary) school and this morning I had the great privilege of taking an assembly there. I introduced some puppets to talk about the joy of reading, then spoke about my favourite book, The Bible, and finished by reading the children the story of The Lost Coin from 'The Lion Storyteller Bible' by Bob Hartman. It was great fun and we all seemed to enjoy it!

Anyway, I thought it might be a nice idea to have Book Week on our online noticeboard and so, each day this week, I’ll share with you a book (other than The Bible) that has had a tremendous effect upon me and my ministry.

My first book recommendation of the week is the book I read from this morning at the school: The Lion Storyteller Bible. It consists of 50 stories from The Bible retold by Bob Hartman, an American storyteller now resident in the UK. The stories are so brilliantly and lovingly written, very poetic and incredibly enlightening, faithful to the original and yet breathing fresh life into such well-known episodes from the Old and New Testaments.

I first came across Bob’s work at Spring Harvest (a 6-day Christian family event held each Easter season) a few years ago and I have used The Storyteller Bible myself ever since, in worship services and in schools. The joy of this book is that it delights children and adults alike - in fact, it’s usually adults that, after the service, most want to talk about what I’ve read from the book.

This Sunday at 10.45 a.m. we gather for worship and David will be focussing on various passages from the Book of Acts as he speaks of "A Community On Purpose: the local church as intentional community’. A children’s Sunday School and creche are available and do stay for tea, coffee and soft drinks after the service.

At 6.00 p.m., we will meet in the Newell Room for a time of informal worship which will include communion.

Chaplaincy at Wellingborough Town FC

In addition to being the minister of Mill Road Baptist Church, I am club chaplain to Wellingborough Town Football Club 2004, offering pastoral support to officials, players and supporters. Wellingborough Town (‘The Doughboys’) is a community club which supports local charities and seeks to be a real asset to the town of Wellingborough and its residents.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Each weekday evening until Tuesday January 24th, from 7.00 - 7.30 p.m., Christians from all over the town are meeting at the Salvation Army building in Queen Street to pray for Christian Unity - it would be great if you could join us!

On Sunday at 4.30 p.m., there is a service to mark the week of prayer for Christian unity, again at the Salvation Army citadel. Do come along!

"Serving Christ at the heart of our community"

Our logo is of a cross within a heart - we intend that the cross be at the centre of our lives and that everything we do and say should emanate from a heart that embraces the cross and all it represents.

Our ‘motto’ (in case you can't tell from the photo) is "Serving Christ at the heart of our community" and that is precisely what we aim to be doing. Some of the practical ways in which we are seeking to express this heartfelt desire are as follows: English language courses for people from overseas, together with literacy and numeracy classes, which are run in partnership with Northants County Council; a parent-toddler group and a club for adults with learning disabilities, which we accommodate; our own children's and youth groups; and the Tea Dance we hold for more senior local citizens.

Christmas Day: Giving our hearts to Jesus

A bumper congregation gathered at the church on Christmas morning to celebrate the birthday of Jesus. We decided that what Jesus wanted most of all for Christmas was our hearts, so in a symbolic action we brought our hearts to Him and placed them with Him in the manger.

This morning, around 220 Victoria Schools' pupils, staff and parents squeezed into the church to celebrate Christmas. With readings from Junior school pupils, music from the Junior school's choir, musicians, staff choir and pupils from both schools, and contributions from Harry and Kylie (puppets), the Christmas assembly was a lively and enjoyable event. All the readers, singers and musicians were fantastic, but the staff choir's rendition of 'O Happy Day' will live long in the memory!

Back from Niort!

Church minister, David Hughes, together with Brian and Lesley Emerson are back from a trip to Niort, Wellingborough's twin town in France. David gave a presentation at the town's Assembly of God church on Saturday evening and preached at Niort Baptist Church on Sunday morning (see photo), with translation provided by Lesley. This was David's second visit to the town and the links between the two Baptist churches were strengthened even further. It is hoped that more members of the churches will visit their counterparts over the next year or two.

Well, what a weekend! Ishmael gave everybody a fantastic time at the Praise Party on Saturday night and at the morning service today (Sunday). We had a good number of people at both meetings and a really fun time was had by all, as we praised the Lord in true Ishmael-style. Thanks, too, to Irene who was great with the technical stuff and in leading us in prayer!
